A Bloomington man is heading to Boston for medical care after he was released from a Venezuelan prison last week.

Todd Leininger had been in prison for nearly five years, and a Venezuelan court ordered his release in November. But, he remained in custody for unknown reasons until April 24.

In a post on a Facebook page providing updates about his situation, Leininger's mother writes that they're traveling from Miami to Boston Tuesday so Leininger can get medical treatment. She also posted a link to a GoFundMe page that's raising money to help Leininger rebuild his life now that he's back in the U.S.

"... he is home and we start the long road to recovery," the page says. "The emotional cost has been tremendous, the financial cost running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars."

The fundraiser has a goal of $100,000.

It's unclear how soon Leininger could return to Indiana.
