Bill Would Provide Property Tax Deductions For Disabled Veterans

Disabled veterans, or their surviving spouses, would receive property tax deductions under a bill passed by the Senate Thursday.

Senate Bill 135 – authored by Sen. Doug Eckerty, R-Yorktown, and Sen. Travis Holdman, R-Markle – would increase the maximum assessed property value that would qualify for the tax deduction from $143,160 to $195, 600.

In order to be eligible for the deduction, veterans must have a total disability rating from the military, or be at least 62 years old, and have at least a 10 percent disability rating.

In 2013, close to 17,000 Hoosier veterans who were totally disabled received veteran property tax deductions. If the bill passes, the number of deductions could increase by almost 25 percent.

“This is just a small way that we can show appreciation for our veteran’s sacrifices and service,” Holdman said.

SB 135 now moves to the House for consideration.
