A cyclist died after being struck by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department vehicle on Indianapolis’s near eastside Monday afternoon.

According to IMPD, an officer responding to a call passed another car on the left as its driver attempted a left-hand turn. IMPD said the officer then tried to avoid a collision with the other vehicle, and collided with the bike rider.

The injured man was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was in critical condition. The officer was also taken to the hospital, where he underwent a standard post-accident blood draw. The officer’s body camera was activated during the incident.

The IMPD Crash Investigation Unit will determine what led to the crash, and IMPD Internal Affairs will hold a separate investigation.
