Banned Books Highlight Week At Vonnegut Library

Banned Books Highlight Week At Vonnegut Library

One local library is hosting a week’s worth of literary happenings.  The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library is celebrating National Banned Books Week by presenting a series of free events.

Maybe most interesting is the work being done by local author Hugh Vandivier. He is spending the week holed up in the library among some of history's most controversial texts.  Hugh believes the freedom of literature is uniquely American.

"That is something we should hold dear," Vandivier says. "We should be able to think critically."

He explains that only last year Vonnegut's "Slaughter House Five" was banned by a school board in Missouri.  Other plans to highlight the week at the Vonnegut Library include a new art show featuring the work of Indy artists reimagining the covers of taboo books and a First Amendment Film Fest.
