U.S. Rep. Andre Carson (D-Indianapolis) responded Wednesday to the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, where 32 people were killed.
At an event in Indianapolis, Carson said the Trump administration’s rhetoric is an issue, but he also says gun regulation is critical.
“I am urging people, Republicans, Democrats, white, black, rich, or poor, to urge Mitch McConnell to call an emergency session to make sure the Senate passes the two House bills that have already been passed: The Background Checks Act and also the other bill that we did dealing with the Charleston loophole,” he said on Wednesday.

The loophole allows some firearms to be sold without a complete background check. Carson calls it the Charleston loophole because a background check could have prevented the 2015 shooting at a historic Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine people were killed.
The Senate reconvenes in early September, but McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, could call an emergency vote during the break.
