Democrat André Carson won his reelection bid for Indiana’s 7th congressional district with more than 68% of the vote. The district represents most of Indianapolis.

“It is a supreme honor to represent you in Washington, DC. It is an honor that I do not take for granted,” Carson told a crowd at the Democratic watch party in downtown Indianapolis Tuesday night.

The Associated Press called the race for Carson at 9:06 p.m. He defeated Republican John Schmitz who took more than 28% of the vote, and Libertarian Rusty Johnson with more than 2%. Precincts are still reporting.

“We all want the same thing at the end of the day, we want jobs, we want safer communities, we want a secure future for our children, and we want to make sure our taxpayer dollars are being represented properly,” Carson said.

Speaking to WFYI earlier this year, Carson said he was running on several key issues that included growing local economic development, road and school funding,  and support for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Carson has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2008 and was the first-ever Muslim to serve on the House Intelligence Committee.

When Carson ran in 2022, he won reelection with nearly 70% of the vote.
