INDIANAPOLIS – A group of climate change activists lined the street outside the office of Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly Monday, urging the senator to reject a Congressional Review Act resolution later this week.
The resolution would repeal America’s Clean Power Plan, eliminating new regulations on carbon emissions for power plants and preventing any similar regulations from being implemented in the future.
Christian Theological Seminary President Rev. Matthew Myer Boulton was among the protestors.
“What we should be doing as a country is not tying our hands – which is what this legislative maneuver would amount to – but freeing our hands to lead,” Boulton said. “The United States has always led when it comes to great moral issues.”
Indiana University law student Margo Tucker also attended the demonstration. She said Donnelly’s swing vote will be critical to rejecting the resolution and taking a stand on climate change.
“I believe Sen. Donnelly has two choices,” Tucker said. “He can choose to lead, ensure a sustainable future for our youth and to show once again America is a beacon of morality and democracy for the world or he can follow the status quo and choose to do nothing and let my generation and those who follow pay for the consequences of his generation’s inaction.”
Donnelly is expected to cast his vote later this week.
