A broken HVAC system amid the recent heat wave has prompted concern about the welfare of animals at IndyHumane.
WFYI learned of high temperatures in the organization’s kennel area Tuesday night. On Wednesday IndyHumane Interim CEO Jennifer Bedsole confirmed there have been mechanical problems with a new air conditioning unit installed in the kennels last month.
In an emailed statement, Bedsole said they have addressed the issue with its HVAC partner.
“We have put measures into place to accommodate the animals as we migrate through this issue, including portable AC units,” Bedsole said. “We are hopeful that the situation will be fixed by tomorrow."
Indianapolis has experienced a string of days with high temperatures in the 90s.
IndyHumane provides shelter, veterinary care and adoption services to homeless dogs and cats. The nonprofit also offers low-cost vaccine clinics and low-cost spay or neuter surgeries to pet owners.
