2014 Murder Rate Ahead Of 2013

Seven people were murdered over the course of eight hours last night.

The series of violence has city leaders looking for answers and asking for help.

Police Chief Rick Hite says he didn’t sleep very well because of the outbreak of deadly crime.

"You have a Chief before you who is a little upset today because we have a situation in our community where we have a few stubborn folks who just don't get it," he said. Hite says the incidents were not random and believes there are commonalities between the victims and suspects.

He says law enforcement is doing what it can, but is calling on the community to take a more active role in preventing these types of crimes.

"We are working on the fact that we are identifying crime, the fear of crime, and of course, the quality of life in our community that is very important to us.  We have a responsibility, all of us, collectively, to make this city safe," said Hite.  "We need the citizens to understand these (victims) are our sons and daughters. These are people who are a part of our city."

There have been 26 murders in the city this year, which is ahead of pace from 2013 - the deadliest year in Indianapolis in six years.

IMPD reports that 89 percent of suspects and 71 percent of the victims have a criminal history.
