INDIANAPOLIS – Seven-digit dialing will soon be a thing of the past for Hoosiers in the 317 area code.
An overlay of the new 463 area code will make 10-digit dialing mandatory starting Sept. 17, 2016.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission ordered the overlay in April 2015 to secure a continuous supply of phone numbers as the region grows.
While all existing numbers will remain the same, new phone lines or those who switch services may switch area codes. Phone companies will begin assigning new 463 numbers on Oct. 17, 2016.
The IURC said the cost of phone service, the price of calls, and coverage areas will remain unchanged by the overlay.
