One person was killed and five others injured, including an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer, on Sunday morning on the city’s east side.
In a press release, IMPD said two officers in “full police uniform were working off-duty employment” at a bar located at 9449 E Washington Street. A disturbance occurred in the parking lot and there was an exchange of gunfire between the two off-duty police officers and at least one suspect. One of the officers was shot and injured.
Police responded to the scene and found four injured civilians –– three males in their 40s and one female in her early 30s –– believed to have been shot. All of them were sent to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
IMPD said that another person arrived at Community East Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The incident is still under investigation, IMPD said. One firearm was located on the scene. Multiple officers had body cameras, which were activated during the incident, according to IMPD.
As is standard procedure, the officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave.
This marks the 26th gun violence incident in Indianapolis in March alone.
