About the Event

Join WFYI Live for an Indie Lens Pop-Up screening of WE WANT THE FUNK! on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at Kan-Kan Cinema. This screening is an exclusive first look at the documentary ahead of its premiere on WFYI on April 8.

The event will include a showing of WE WANT THE FUNK! Before the film, WFYI’s Kyle Long, producer of Cultural Manifesto and Echoes of Indiana Avenue, will host a panel discussion with pioneering musicians from the Indianapolis funk scene, including Lester Johnson, co-founder of Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign. Learn how Indianapolis musicians contributed to the development of funk music. This screening is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is recommended.

About WE WANT THE FUNK!

WE WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul and early jazz roots to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown's dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle and Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, the story also traces funk's influences on both new wave and hip-hop.

About Cultural Manifesto

Each week on Cultural Manifesto, Kyle Long reveals stories and sounds from the creative frontlines of the past and present. Through music, archives and artist interviews, discover how creators shape meaning with sound, in Indianapolis and well beyond. Tune in on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. and again on Saturdays at 6 p.m., or wherever you get your podcasts, for discoveries that will delight your ears and expand your understanding of our shared world.
