Educators and parents searching for educational
and fun Spanish language materials on pbs.org
have a growing array of content from which to
choose. Here is a sampling of the burgeoning
roster of Internet content PBS offers in Spanish,
targeted to teachers and parents.
In the PBS Parents Guide to Reading and
Language, there is currently one article
-- on raising multi-lingual kids -- in Spanish.
However, by the end of the year major areas
of the site will be in Spanish.
PBS Parents links to this bilingual site
from the PBS Parents Guide to Child Development,
which focuses on the development and care
of children during the first five years.
This site helps parents understand and
deal with the influences on their kids from
TV, movies, advertising, computers and the
Internet. Special articles cover educating
kids about the unfair portrayal of stereotypes,
creating with media, making healthy TV viewing
choices and understanding the impact of TV
on children under the age of three. The entire
site has been translated into Spanish.
This site focuses on literacy development
from birth through third grade and how parents
can nurture that development at each age.
A majority of the site has been translated
into Spanish, including milestones in listening,
talking, reading and writing and tips for
nurturing this development in babies, toddlers,
preschoolers, kindergarteners, and first,
second and third graders.
This site focuses on communicating effectively
with children and includes strategies on
positive ways to talk and listen (including
when you're discussing difficult topics),
negotiating with kids, dealing with kids
when they have tantrums and other meltdowns
and age-by-age insights. The entire site
has been translated into Spanish.
This site focuses on communication strategies
for helping kids cope with illness and easing
their fears when they have to go to the doctor
or dentist. Topics include getting kids to
take medicine, going to the doctor or dentist,
helping kids get better and stay healthy,
and helping parents keep their cool when
they're dealing with the stresses of sick
kids. There are also age-by-age insights
and a kid-friendly medical dictionary to
help parents explain medical terms to their
kids. The entire site has been translated
into Spanish.
This site provides strategies to help parents
ease their kids' fears when they are confronted
by news reports on, or otherwise hear about,
war or incidents of violence. The entire
site is being translated into Spanish.
This site includes 18 hands-on activities
to help kids practice early math skills through
everyday experiences. There are six activities
for each of three age groups - infants & toddlers,
preschoolers & kindergarteners, and first & second
graders. All 18 activities, each taking up
one page, are being translated into Spanish.
Inclusive Communities
