Former Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter visited his hometown of Lafayette Thursday to make his first public statements in a bid to regain his former position.

The U.S. Department of Education says Janell Uerkwitz of Murdock Elementary School in Lafayette in one of this year's recipients of the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership.

The 10 Indiana schools are among 285 public and 50 private schools that will be recognized in a ceremony in Washington D.C., next month.

The Lafayette factory now has about 3,800 workers and produces about 300,000 vehicles a year. Subaru plans to boost production by nearly 100,000 vehicles a year.

Subaru is furnishing 10 vehicles that will support the so-called "torch caravan": a group of government and tourism officials who'll help the flame make its 2,300-mile journey across the state. The cars will be made at Subaru of Indiana Automotive's Lafayette plant.
