Gary Charter School Gets Second Chance With Trine University

GARY, Ind. (AP) — A Gary charter school has been spared after it was set to close next month because Ball State University declined to reauthorize its charter.

The (Munster) Times reports Angola-based Trine University agreed Monday to reauthorize Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, which would have closed June 30.

Ball State declined in January to renew the charter for the school, citing management issues and failures to comply with state and federal laws. The school's board was replaced in March and another group was given the go-ahead to take over.

But last month the state declined to allow the school to continue operating without a charter. That prompted school leaders to scramble and find a new sponsor. The state school board must approve the new agreement at a June meeting.
