Update on May 1, 2024:

The Marion County Prosecutor’s office has charged Demarcus McCloud with three felony counts of arson for his alleged role in the IndyGo bus fire on April 24 near the intersection of 38th Street and Meridian Street.

The deputy prosecuting attorney requested the court set a bond in the amount of $100,000, and that the court issue an order for McCloud to stay away from all IndyGo buses and bus stations.

Update on April 25, 2024:

A 45-year-old man was arrested in connection with the IndyGo bus that caught fire Wednesday morning, local news organizations report.

The incident caused an estimated $2 million in damages. The bus station reopened later Wednesday. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are now handling the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for ATF declined to comment.

An Indianapolis IndyGo bus caught fire this morning at around 7:10 a.m. at the intersection of 38th and Meridian Streets, causing traffic disruptions on Meridian Street.

According to fire department officials, initial calls reported a vehicle fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find an IndyGo bus heavily engulfed in flames, stopped in the northbound lanes of Meridian Street. The fire spread to a nearby bus shelter, prompting crews to declare it a working bus and structure fire.

Firefighters say they brought the fire under control within 10 minutes. The bus driver reported that there were four people on board, including himself, and that all passengers were evacuated safely through the middle door.

Two of the passengers were transported to Eskenazi Hospital by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services with what were described as slight injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Fire Department and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department fire investigators.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also involved in the incident, which has an estimated damage exceeding $2 million.
