Original air date: 2/8/2010

A Universal Language

Description:The Central American country of El Salvador is a place in transition—with one foot in the past, recovering from 12 years of a brutal civil war, and the other foot in the future, where multi-national firms are setting up, sad to say, sweat shops to take advantage of cheap labor.  Caught in the middle are the children of El Salvador, who are being trained in math and science in preparation for this “new age,” but who receive no training in art or creative writing.  But that’s where the “Indiana Poets” come in.  Led by former State Treasurer—and former Indiana Poet Laureate—Joyce Brinkman, they’ve come to the town of Quezaltepeque to conduct writing workshops in the most unlikely of places—reaching out to voices that don’t speak a word of English.

Travels with Darby: Purple, My Foot!

Description:There’s an old saying that one should never see how laws and sausages are made.  Now, you can add wine to that list, if “Across Indiana” producers Aric Hartvig, Jim Simmons and Jim’s trusty dog Darby are involved.  In this tale not for the squeamish, we head south to Vevay, the home of the first commercial winery in the United States (the first wines sampled by none other than THE Thomas Jefferson).  Why not for the squeamish?  Well, it’s the First Annual Celebrity Grape Stomp Competition, whose motto is:  “Crush me, stomp me, make me wine!”

Chickiepoo’s

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Would you give up everything to get everything?  That’s the decision one Madison family thought it had to make.  Gregor and Phoebe James’ 4 year-old daughter Isa wants to be a chef like her dad.  But Isa has also been diagnosed with leukemia.  Faced with the prospect of losing Isa at such a tender age, Gregor left a prosperous career as a corporate chef to set up a small family restaurant bearing Isa’s nickname of “Chickiepoo.”   Now, the family cooks, cleans and waits tables together . . . and Isa—true to her dreams—has a tiny chef’s coat to wear when she works alongside her dad.
