Travels with Darby: Marsh Madness
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Since the late 1800's, more than a dozen property owners have drained and tried to farm the wetlands just outside of Linton ... all of them have lost money, and plenty of it. That's because, if ever a tract of land had a destiny, it's this one ... to be absolutely, totally, completely and unequivocally ... a wetland. And now it is, thanks to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Goose Pond Fish&Wildlife Area is a refuge for eagles, whooping cranes, king rail ... and 11,000 migrating sand hill cranes, birds which have never roosted in southern Indiana before, but are doing so now in front of a bevy of birdwatchers, amateur photographers, and "Across Indiana" producer Jim Simmons and his trusty dog, Darby. | | Credits: | Produced by Jim Simmons | | Location: | Linton | | Contact: | www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3094.htm friendsofgoosepond.org |
A Universal Language – Part III
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Poetry is the passion of a politician, an art collector, a student, a professor and a journalist--for these are the jobs of our Indiana Poets, who, in the final chapter of their trip to Quezaltepeque in El Salvador, meet the Cortez family: Marvin, Jr.--one of the translators--and his 14 year-old sister Sondra--who, although she does not speak English, has become the darling of our Hoosiers because of her willingness to be daring with this new art form called poetry. Of all the words used to describe our poets' journey, perhaps the best are the ones of gratitude sent in a letter from the Cortez children's father, the manager of a paper mill, which--when translated--read in part: "Dear friends, our hearts don't understand, nor do they speak English or Spanish. But they do know the universal language of love, friendship, and the brotherhood of the human race. There's nothing more important that we can give our children than to teach them to happily give of themselves unconditionally to the universal human race." | | Credits: | Produced by Jim Simmons

Will Duck for Food
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | There's really nothing special about the taste of the patties--or for that matter, the microwavable waffles--at the Flying Cheeseburger in Columbus. But the place has become a local legend because of the way they are served. Seventy-seven year-old Bill just wraps ‘em up in cellophane and throws them at your table, frisbee-style, right from the griddle. | | Credits: | Produced by Aric Hartvig | | Location: | Columbus | | Contact: | Flying Cheeseburger is located at the corner of Ohio Street and Gladstone in Columbus "Stop by and I'll throw you one" - Bill |
Pride, Prejudice and Porcelain
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | For our next story, well, we don't have a time machine to take you thousands of years into the past--and the corporate biplane is still locked in the hanger because we can't find the key--so we can't take you to the mysterious Far East. So, we're going to do the next best thing. We're off to Martinsville to rediscover an ancient art that you might have enjoyed in the aforementioned times and places, and here in Indiana, its undergoing a modern-day reawakening. So, is the ancient art of china painting a craft or an artform? You'll also be a part of that ongoing debate as Indiana members of the World Organization of China Painters insist that it's art all the way. | | Credits: | Produced by Sarah Mynett | | Location: | Martinsville | | Contact: | http://groups.google.com/group/indiana-wocp |
Collective Creativity
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Whoever said you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs obviously never looked at life from the egg's point of view. Nor for that matter, from the perspective of the highly-trained professional artist who, in taking a chance and bending a few rules, might shatter a hard-earned reputation instead. Such skittish artists should have no fear, however, for "Indy Convergence (in Indianapolis)" provides a safe place for artists to experiment. In fact, organizers encourage risk-taking and rule-breaking, as singers are expected to dance, actors are encouraged to sing, and everyone gets to write a screenplay or two. | | Credits: | Produced by Jim Simmons
Narrated by Sharon Gamble, co-host of WFYI's "The Art of the Matter" | | Location: | Indianapolis | | Contact: | indyconvergence.org |
