Adventures of a Lifetime
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | When in Rome, that is, Indiana, make a point to head down its peaceful streets to find a man who was once the most powerful person in the state. Forty-seven men have held the office of Governor, guiding the state in times of plenty and in eras when the future did not seem so certain. Rome's first citizen is the man who was at our state's helm in the late 60s and early 70s, Edgar Whitcomb. As Governor, he hobnobbed with Presidents and the nation’s elite. But it's his life before he held the office that will fascinate you, one with enough twists and turns that it was once a best-selling book. And that includes being held a prisoner of World War II at Fort Santiago in the Philippines, a camp so terrible that only one out of every ten men held there survived. | | Credits: | Bryan Boyd and Ben Shadley, Narrated by: Ray Rice | | Location: | Rome, Indiana | | Contact: | ctaylor@wfyi.org |
PK Made EZ
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Next, we’re headed to a Pecha Kucha party in Indianapolis. That’s pronounced Pa-CHACH-ka. Why might that be relevant to your every-day-“Across-Indiana”-viewing life? Well, everyone has sat through a boring presentation about something. Come on, how often do you actually pay attention to one those bar-graph heavy slideshows? Apparently this multi-media apathy is something that crosses cultures because some folks at a design firm in Japan decided to do something about it. They set up a presentation format with a couple of new rules: (1) one you have no control over slide timing; (2) as a member of the audience, if you don't enjoy what's being said you can talk about whatever you want (you know, just like grade school).
The result: Pecha Kucha, described as powerpoint meets fight club ~ and some say it's on its way to being hotter than Karaoke. | | Credits: | Aric Hartvig | | Location: | Indianapolis | | Contact: | pkindy.org |
History Matters: A Poetic Fish Out of Water
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Remember the scene from the 1959 film, “Ben Hur,” when Jack Hawkins watches the entire Roman fleet burn only to find out later he’d won an incredible victory? Yes, its one of life’s great truths that we often cannot see the end of the journey while we’re still traveling down the road. And so it is with this trip’s “History Matters.” It’s the story of a man considered one of the foremost literary figures of the 20th century, the father of modernism, and a mentor to such giants as James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. He’s also the man known to walk turn-of-the-last-century Crawfordsville’s street using a walking stick and wearing huge capes, a big floppy hat and purple socks, all the while keeping company with women who liked to drink spirits and actresses who liked to dress like men. Yes, he was many years from being great and many light-years away from being accepted when he lived within our borders. But, who was the sinner and who the sinned against in the life of . . . Ezra Pound? You be the judge. | | Credits: | Angel Carothers, Narrated by: Carrie Wood-Hoppenjans | | Location: | Crawfordsville | | Contact: | indianahistory.org |
