Think Globally; Act…Like a Pirate
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | When congress relaxed federal regulations for receiving information from Global Positioning Satellites in the late 90s, new applications for the technology sprang up left and right: a lost hiker or child wearing a GPS tracking unit could be easily located; products like OnStar and other navigational devices integrate maps and telephone directory information with GPS technology to provide consumers assistance with driving directions; and new-age adventurers employ the technology to construct a worldwide scavenger hunt of sorts.
The premise is rather simple: participants hide a “cache” (any kind of container with small collectables inside), record the exact longitude and latitude of the hiding spot, and register it online at www.geocaching.com. Seekers can go to the website to find cache listings in their areas and use a handheld GPS unit to direct themselves to within six feet or so of the exact location.
Administrators of Indy Parks facility Southeastway Park organized a geocaching activity to coincide with Earth Day. The geocaching crew strolled the trails of the park, equipped with handheld GPS units and garbage bags—a chance to clean up while they cache in. | | Location: | Acton | | Contact: | www.geocaching.com |
A Second Act for Suni
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | In the early sixties, acoustic guitar fingerpicking pioneer Suni McGrath began performing sonorous, complex melodies and rhythms on the 12-string guitar. He accumulated a sizeable following in the Greenwich Village music scene as one of the original and forefront 12-string solo artists, and achieved airplay on NYC radio station, WYSO. In 1963, he played a show in Newport, RI where a talent scout for the Piedmont record label first noticed him; the label recorded his first album, Cornflower Suite. After his second and third albums were recorded and released, the forth and fifth slated albums were dropped as supercharged electric guitar riffs from early heavy metal hits “steamrolled” Suni’s folk style. More than 25 years later, the founder of Manhattan-based music label Near Mint tracked Suni down in Eastern rural Indiana to collaborate on an album that celebrated the genre of folk and the most talented artists from different musical generations. | | Location: | Anderson | | Contact: | Suni McGrath MySpace Page |

Fly Like the Wind
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | The Civil War memorial in New Harmony pays tribute to one extraordinary member of the Union army. But the honoree was not your typical soldier. She was only six years old when she went off to war, and was a different breed altogether.
In 1861, George Barrett of New Harmony volunteered for the Union's army and brought along his noble steed, Fly. In the three years that the pair served, they learned much about war, and grew very close. In one narrow escape, while being chased by the Confederate army, George and Fly came to the top of a high bluff where a river flowed below. Without fear the man and his horse jumped down to the river to swim across, only George was not a swimmer and the river was deep. Thankfully, Fly swam strong while George had a hold of her tail. | | Location: | New Harmony | | Contact: | http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/KADE/newharmony/home.html, http://www.newharmony.biz/, www.thecharminghorse.com/book |
History Matters: Gridley
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Despite that Indiana is a landlocked state, some very important naval heroes were born and raised here. One if these honorable men, Charles Vernon Gridley completed naval school in 1864, and was immediately dispatched to the USS Oneida, a ship in Admiral David G. Farragut's fleet.
Gridley served for many years in the navy, gaining the praise of many officers and working his way up the ranks. He earned honors and awards, but an order given by an officer would be his ultimate claim to fame: "You may fire when ready, Gridley." | | Location: | Logansport |
