80 Years . . . and Counting

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Sometimes, when we hear about a story, it just screams “Across Indiana.” This one sure does. You’re invited to Avis Brown’s retirement-slash-birthday party . . . er . . . make that Avis Brown’s SURPRISE retirement-slash-birthday party (one in which the appearance of our cameras is part of the surprise). Avis has been the one-and-only bookkeeper at the Sampler in tiny Homer for the past 60 years, opting to call it a career at the ripe young age of 80. It’s a gala event for, as you’ll see, when you’ve got a good compass for your travels in life, you make a lot of friends.

Community by Design

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Next, we’re headed to Bloomington and the unorthodox art of Karen Baldner. She makes her own paper and turns it into intricate designs. But what is most important to Karen is the fact that she often involves novice artists and other members of the community in her work and teaches her techniques to children. Why? Because, says Karen, art remains vital only if the creative process is shared and relationships are formed. “The end product,” she says, “is testament, for as long as there is art, of the bond we forged.”

(Hot)Dog Day Afternoon

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Travel through any small Indiana town and you’ll find them -- summer festivals devoted to tons of edible stuff. So, how does the top-flight producer staff of “Across Indiana” decide which ones to cover? We rely on our gut! In this case, paying homage to the ubiquitous staple of Americana, a delicacy devoured in truckloads by Babe Ruth and washed down with champagne by Marlene Dietrich – THE FRANKFURTER – appropriately enough, at the Hot Dog Festival in Frankfort.

Acting Like a Kid

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:We’re sure that you’ve all seen Jay Leno’s “Headlines” segment on the Tonight Show. Last June, the large-jawed one got a huge laugh when he displayed an ad for a family adventure that involves sliding down into a huge toilet. Well, should that ad have gotten your attention, you’ll want to know that the giant commode resides here in this state—in Columbus, at a place where kids can learn adult science and adults can play like kids. And what better producer to send than our intern Robyn Shepherd—who, at the ripe old age of 21— is getting married, graduating from college and looking for a real-world job. This may be her last chance ever to act like a kid.
