More than 100 teachers packed a State Board of Education meeting to voice their frustrations about new literacy training requirements.

The political arm of Indiana's largest teachers union, the Indiana State Teachers Association, is putting its resources behind Democrat Jennifer McCormick in the race for governor.

The Indiana State Teachers Association said it found out less than a week before the legislative session ended early Wednesday about emails sent through a form on its website not reaching the accounts of lawmakers, The Indianapolis Star reported.

The Indiana State Teachers Association is calling on lawmakers during the 2022 General Assembly to allow educators to negotiate on issues related to health and safety, class sizes and teacher prep periods.

The state's largest teachers union says it wants lawmakers to take action on recommendations made by the governor's compensation commission to boost teacher pay.

The legislation mandates that school districts have to get permission from teachers each year before deducting union dues from their paycheck.

Senate Bill 251 would have teachers opt in to union membership every year while being informed of their right to not join the Indiana State Teachers Association. School districts would have to confirm their decision by email.

Teachers may be required to take extra steps to pay union dues if a bill discussed Wednesday becomes law.

The American Federation of Teachers Indiana and the Indiana State Teachers Association released their legislative priorities this week.
