About the Event

Join WFYI Live for an Indie Lens Pop-Up screening of The Tuba Thieves on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at Kan-Kan Cinema. This screening is an exclusive first look at the documentary ahead of its premiere on WFYI on May 20, 2024.

The event will include six excerpts from the film, discussions and interactive activities centering d/Deaf and hard of hearing perspectives and experiences of sound, sight and multimedia. The film is fully captioned, ASL interpreters will be onsite for the entire presentation and live CART captioning will be provided.

About The Tuba Thieves
What is the role of sound and what does it mean to listen? Hard of hearing filmmaker Alison O’Daniel uses a series of tuba thefts in Los Angeles high schools as a jumping-off point to explore these questions. Through several d/Deaf people telling stories in a unique game of telephone, the central mystery of The Tuba Thieves isn’t about theft of instruments; it’s about the nature of sound itself.

This screening is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. This event is part of the WFYI Live at Kan-Kan event series on the second weekend of each month.
