Young people marched in Indianapolis to call for an end to violence. Organizers also gave out gun lock boxes.
Sydney Dauphinais/WFYIAround 100 people met at the Landmark for Peace Memorial on Saturday for the annual Peace Walk in honor of National Youth Violence Prevention Week.
The event was organized by the Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition.
Indianapolis has seen a wave of youth gun violence recently with 16 incidents involving children under 18 this year alone. In response, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has started enforcing a curfew for children under 18 earlier this month.
Anelle Williams, one of the Peace Walk attendees, lost her brother to gun violence a few years ago. She said she hopes people will show more empathy to each other.
“I realize as an individual I can’t put an end to it permanently, but bringing awareness does help,” Williams said.
The Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition handed out free gun lock boxes for Indianapolis residents who own firearms.
The event was held in partnership with Indianapolis Mayor's Youth Leadership Council, Indianapolis Office of Public Health & Safety and Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence.
